Noted as being the largest, fastest and most competitive motor sports facility in the world, Talladega Superspeedway (formerly known as the Alabama International Motor Speedway until 1989) has also established records for speed. Built in 1969, Talladega Superspeedway covers 3,000 acres and seats 175,000 fans (including infield). This 2.66 tri-oval track is banked by 33 degree north and south turns.
Talladega Superspeedway and Mark Martin hold the record for the fastest and caution free 500 mile stock car race in 1997 at 188.354 mph. Talladega Superspeedway also holds the record for the most lead changes of 75 in any NASCAR Cup event in 1984 giving it the distinction of NASCAR’s most competitive track.
Talladega became the second speedway hosting NASCAR Cup events to install S.A.F.E.R. (Steel and Foam Energy Reduction) Barriers on the outside walls of the track in 2002. In 2004 Talladega Superspeedway added S.A.F.E.R. Barriers on all four turns, the tri- oval and on the inside retaining wall of the backstretch in an ongoing NASCAR effort for driver safety.
Dale Earnhardt holds the top record of 10 NASCAR cup victories at Talladega Superspeedway. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has followed in his father’s footsteps with five career wins being second to this father.
Being known as the track for “The Big One” in 1988 NASCAR mandated that all races must be run with restrictor plates at Talladega Superspeedway due to the fact that cars were reaching speeds in excess of 200 mph.
When selecting your seat at Talladega Superspeedway, without a doubt, the seats in the tri-oval, oval hill north and south towers are the best. They are located in front of the pits/pit road and also they are elevated above the grandstands for a good view of the entire track. If you prefer seats at start/finish, the Moss Thornton Grandstand or the Birmingham Tower is what you’re looking for. The Birmingham Tower provides a good view of the start/finish as well as the cars exiting pit road. These really are terrific seats.
Keep in mind that when selecting your seat, the Tower sections of the track gives you a high view track while all Grandstand seating gets you closer to the track.
Talladega Superspeedway hosts two NASCAR Sprint Cup races per year the Aarons 499 in April and the UAW Ford 500 in October.
